DORADO, PUERTO RICO – The Wofford men's golf team put forth a strong showing to open the spring slate of the season, placing in a tie for fifth in the Dorado Beach Intercollegiate. Wofford recorded a score of 851 at 13-under, paced by three Terriers in the top 20, to secure the top-five finish.
The Terriers opened hot, recording a 280 in the first round. Despite a second round 288, Wofford finished strong with a 283 to move up a spot into a tie for fifth with Loyola Maryland at 13-under par. In the 16-team field, Wofford posted the fifth-best par 3 average at 3.18 and the sixth-best par 5 average at 4.58. With 60 birdies, the Terriers tied for the second most in the field and finished just three shy of the leader, UNCG.
"Really proud of the boys for a solid start to the spring," said head coach
Todd Eckstein. "Miller came out firing and was in position to win with just a few holes left before getting a bad break. Finishing the tournament with a round that tied for the best of the day with Ben, Charles, and Will shooting their best rounds of the event is encouraging for the rest of the season."
Host UNCG won the event with a 29-under performance, carding 835 to best Southern Mississippi by eight strokes.
Ben Jordan was the top finisher for Wofford with a 211 score at 5-under par, placing in 13
th. He bookended his rounds with a pair of 69s with a 73 sandwiched in the middle. Jordan's total score and relation to par are both new career bests.
Winthrop's Jeff Nelson earned low medalist honors with an 11-under 205 result, beating a duo of runners up by two strokes in the 101-player field.
Miller Carr and
Charles Warren mark three Terriers in the top 20 as the duo tied for 20
th with each carding a 2-under 214. Miller had the best two opening rounds for Wofford, posting a 67 and 69 to sit a stroke off the lead in second place entering the final day. Despite a 78 in the final round, Carr finished with one of the best performances of his career by tying for 20
th to secure his second top 20. The opening 67 is his career low, as are his final 214 total and 2-under relation to par. Carr collected a pair of eagles, both in his opening round. He was one shy of having the most in the tournament, and his 16 birdies were two off the tournament high. Warren improved with each round, carding a 73 to start before adding a 71 and 70 to finish, securing his third-career top 20. Warren owned the best par-3 average in the event with a 2.92 mark.
Will Jones placed in a tie for 60
th at 5-over with a score of 221. Jones opened with rounds of 76 and 75, but he finished strong with a 70 on day three, which was among some of the lowest scores of the round. He improved 17 spots on the leaderboard during the final round.
Marshall Butler rounds out the Terrier lineup in a tie for 75
th, posting a 225 score with rounds of 71-80-74.
Competing as an individual,
Glover Amick finished tied for 86
th with a 228 by way of a 76-78-74 showing.
Wofford returns to the Palmetto State for its next event, which is the Palmetto Intercollegiate. The tournament is hosted by USC Aiken over two days on March 10 and 11.
