Box Score GREENVILLE, S.C. -- The Wofford men's soccer team surrendered an early goal but continued to battle before dropping a 1-0 decision at No. 17 Furman Tuesday evening in Southern Conference action at Eugene Stone III Stadium in Greenville, S.C.
The Paladins netted their only goal at 5:28 when Shea Salinas and Patrick Murray assisted on Brooks Duff's seventh goal of the campaign. It would prove to be the deciding factor as Wofford (2-8-1, 0-4 SoCon) shut down the nation's top scoring offense, which averaged 3.09 goals per game entering the contest.
Furman (11-1, 4-0 SoCon), which also boasts the top defense in the country with a 0.36 goals against average entering the match and has surrendered only four goals all season, withstood a Terrier offensive which sent nine shots towards the net, including three consecutive shots wide to end the first half.
Wofford continued to get solid offensive chances in the second stanza, including a header by junior Haskins Howerton which was blocked at the 53:18 mark. Another shot eight minutes later by sophomore Philips Leach was stymied by the Paladin defense.
The Terriers will return to action at 6 p.m. Monday when they host UNC Asheville in a rescheduled contest from the rainout Sept. 14 as part of the Wofford/adidas Invitational.
