ROCK HILL, S.C. – The Wofford men’s tennis team fell 5-2 to Winthrop as they traveled to Rock Hill, S.C., Wednesday afternoon. Sophomore Christopher Williams and freshman Paul Bartholomy were the lone Terriers to pick up wins in singles action.

At the No. 5 position Williams defeated the Eagles’ Marcin Majchrzak 6-3, 6-4. With a win over Winthrop’s Jose Pardo 6-2, 6-3, Bartholomy maintains an undefeated recorded while playing at the No. 6 spot.

In doubles action, the Eagles clinched the doubles points with two matches won at No. 1 and No. 2. The Terriers, however, did claim an 8-6 victory at the No. 3 doubles slot by the duo of Williams and freshman Alan Donald over Majchrzak and Pardo. 

“Today’s loss is one of disappointment and yet I think we took a lot away from it,” head coach Rod Ray commented. “Winthrop has a good team and they played well today. They have some really outstanding players and they work well together as a team. We were so close to winning the doubles point, serving at 6-3 at #1 and losing, and winning at #3. In the doubles area we are definitely making progress. In singles, both Christopher and Paul had nice wins. And George played as well as he has played all year and lost a very close third set tie- breaker to one of the top players in the South. “

Ray continued, “One thing about this group is that they really believe in each other and they won’t quit. That is one thing I am sure of.”

The Terriers will return to the Reeves Tennis Center Thursday for a 2 p.m. match as they host the Bulldogs of UNC Asheville.
