Spartanburg, S.C. – Wofford men’s tennis dropped a competitive home match to city-native USC Upstate Thursday afternoon, 6-1, at the Reeves Tennis Center in front of a equally mixed Terrier and Spartan crowd.
In singles action senior Andrew Stubbs competed into the night as he battled the Spartans’ first-ever Division I ranked player, since joining in 2007, No. 96 Sandy Franz. Stubbs clinched the first set but was defeated as Franz fought back in the final two sets winning 3-6, 6-2, 7-6.
The lone point for the Terriers came from freshman Alan Donald as he defeated Sebastian Gonzales-Orbegoso 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 while playing at the No. 5 singles slot.
Although not able to clinch the doubles point, Wofford did grab a win as the duo of senior Andrew Stubbs and sophomore George Kernodle beat Sandy Franz and his teammate Renzo Airaldi, 8-6, at the No. 1 doubles slot.
“Congratulations to a good USC Upstate team and congratulations to Wofford,” said head coach Rod Ray. “We tried hard and it was a hard fought match. It is definitely a match you want to play early in the year because it makes you better. We finished today a better team. It was a lot of people there and it made for a great atmosphere.”
The Terriers will return to the Reeves Tennis Center as they host Costal Carolina Tuesday for 2:30 p.m. match.
