STATESBORO, Ga. – The Wofford men’s tennis team fell 4-3 to Georgia Southern Saturday afternoon in Southern Conference action as the Terriers visited Statesboro, Ga.
The eagles jumped out on top early in the match as they captured the doubles point, winning two of the three matches at No. 1 and No. 3. The duo of senior Richard Cahi and freshman Paul Bartholomy claimed the No. 2 doubles match beating Philip Prins and Matthew Sands 8-6.
In singles action, sophomore George Kernodle notched a 2-6, 7-5 (10-4) come-from-behind victory at the No. 2 position over Georgia Southern’s Joris De Weerdt.
Freshman Alan Donald fought to claim a 7-6, 6-7 (10-8) win at the No. 3 spot against Gregory Bekkers.
At the No. 5 slot, Bartholomy was also successful, defeating Mark Paetz 7-5, 6-2.
“Georgia Southern did a great job against us today,” said head coach Rod Ray. “It’s hard losing a conference match 4-3, but we will bounce back quickly. We thought today’s match was going to be close and it was. Our guys were ready mentally and physically for a close match, and I’m proud at how we competed. Plain and simple, Georgia Southern won a close doubles point which turned out to be the deciding factor.”
The Terriers will take a 10 day break before returning to action on Wednesday, March 12 in Charlotte, N.C. as they visit the Charlotte 49ers for a 2:30 p.m. match.
