GREENSBORO, N.C. – Wofford men’s tennis concluded the regular season Saturday afternoon with a 4-3 victory over Southern Conference foe UNC Greensboro in Greensboro, N.C. Although the Spartans swept the Terriers in doubles action, Wofford fought back in singles and collected the four necessary wins to clinch the match.
In a battle at the No. 3 position, freshman Alan Donald secured the match win for the Terriers with a 6-2, 6-7, 6-3 victory over Martin Redelinghuys.
For the other three wins: at the No. 1 spot, senior Andrew Stubbs defeated Andrey Bubnov 7-6, 6-4. Freshman Paul Bartholomy competed at the No. 5 slot and notched a 2-6, 6-2, 6-3 come-from-behind victory against William John. At the No. 6 position sophomore Christopher Williams logged a 6-2, 6-4 win over Taylor Befus.
“After a long rain delay, Greensboro showed a lot of heart and played well. We just played a little harder,” said head coach Rod Ray after the match victory. “Greensboro played much better at doubles. However, we did a good job at fighting back in singles. Donald did a good job playing in such a high level environment and clinched the win for us.”
The win registered an 11-10 overall record for the Terriers, while collecting a 5-4 SoCon finish for the 2008 regular season. Wofford will next travel to Charleston, S.C., for the league tournament which begins Thursday, April 17 and is hosted by The Citadel.
