SPARTANBURG, S.C. – As announced by the league office, the Wofford women’s tennis team will enter the Southern Conference tournament as the No. 6 seed in the conference tournament after concluding the regular season 12-7 overall and 4-5 in the league. Hosted by The Citadel, the tournament is set to begin Thursday, April 17 in Charleston, S.C.
At the No. 6 slot, the Terriers earn a first round bye and play Friday against the No. 3 seeded Davidson Wildcats. Not earning a bye, No. 8 Chattanooga and No. 9 Appalachian State open the tournament on Thursday, along with Georgia Southern at the No. 7 spot against the No. 10 seeded Western Carolina. The winner of No. 8 versus No. 9 will see action Friday against the No. 1 seed Furman. The No. 2 seeded College of Charleston will battle against the winner of No. 7 and No. 10 on Friday. Also competing on Friday, after receiving a first round bye is No. 4 UNC Greensboro against the No. 5 seeded Elon.
The Terriers opened the season on a roll going undefeated in the first three matches beating Gardner Webb, 4-3 and sweeping both North Carolina A&T and Mercer 7-0. Spartanburg native USC Upstate snapped the streak as Wofford fell 5-2, but the Terriers never looked back. Wofford went on seven match win streak, while going 2-0 in league action. SoCon foe Elon ended the streak, handing the Terriers a 5-2 loss. Bouncing back, Wofford defeated Western Carolina, 4-2, and Chattanooga, 5-2 but lose to Georgia State in between.
Wofford met with Davidson recently on April 11 during the regular season where the Wildcats captured the match victory 6-1 over the Terriers. The loss for Wofford was among four consecutive defeats that the Terriers suffered to conclude the season during their toughest stanza, a 2-5 loss to the College of Charleston, then nationally ranked No. 66 Furman, 6-1, Davidson and ending with UNC Greensboro, 3-4.
In her first year as assistant and taking majority control over the women’s program, Katie Hangstefer mentored the Terriers to 12 victories, surpassing their 2007 overall record of six. Wofford logged seven doubles shutouts and compiled a record of 7-4 at home and 5-3 on the road.
“I think this year has been a good season for us,” said Hangstefer. “The team has worked very hard. I came in expecting a lot out of them, and they definitely stepped up and worked really hard and gave me all they had. They took the opportunity to beat some teams that they lost to last year, which was so exciting for them. We are all excited about going to Charleston and we are going to give it all we’ve got.”
In their first campaigns in a Terrier uniform, freshmen Sonia Anand and Hayley Baird have paced Wofford to a winning season. The freshman duo combined at the No. 3 doubles spot to log a second best team record of 8-6 overall and 4-4 in conference standings.
Anand leads the Terriers in singles victories with a 12-3 overall record while capturing an 8-1 conference slate, with all but one match played at the No. 6 position. She prevented the team from being swept against league opponent, then Nationally ranked, No. 66 Furman, claiming the lone point of the match over Christina Swindall. Anand remained undefeated in the league with only two matches remaining in the regular season, but fell against Davidson in her only defeat.
Baird has tried action in three different spots in the Terrier lineup, playing one match at the No. 3 slot, three at No. 4 and primarily at the No. 5 position to register a 11-7 overall and 5-4 SoCon record. Baird had a nine-match win streak, tallying wins over league opponents, Appalachian State, Georgia Southern, Elon and Western Carolina.
