Baseball Falls 17-1 At Furman

GREENVILLE, S.C. – The Wofford College baseball team was defeated by Furman University 17-1 on Friday night at Furman Stadium. The Paladins scored seven runs in the seventh inning and out-hit the Terriers fifteen to four in the game.

Wofford is now 20-18 on the season and 4-9 in the Southern Conference, while Furman is 21-14 overall and 7-6 in the conference. The Terriers were led by Michael Gilmartin with a hit and run scored and Adam Kearney with an RBI single.

The Paladins took the lead in the bottom of the second inning. Ryan Lee opened the inning with a double and he was driven in by a double from Brian Harrison. Harrison scored on a wild pitch. A single by Marcus Rose scored two more runs for a 4-0 advantage.

In the top of the fourth, Michael Gilmartin recorded the Terriers’ first hit of the night with a single. A single from Adam Kearney scored Gilmartin for a 4-1 score.

For Furman in the bottom of the sixth, a single by Ryan Lee led off the inning. With a 2-2 count, the home plate umpire lost track of the count and awarded a walk on the third ball. That loaded the bases with two out. A single by Ron Fondu to center field drove in two runs for a 6-2 lead at the end of six.

The Terriers had a single by Mo Seay and a bunt by Emre Caglayan for two runners on with two out, but Wofford could not get a run across the plate in the top of the seventh.

Furman added seven runs in the bottom of the seventh. The Paladins only had three hits in the inning, but four walks and a hit batter provided all the base runners needed to take a 13-1 lead. In the bottom of the eighth, the Paladins added four more runs on four hits to increase the lead to 17-1.

Wofford starter Scott Summers went 6.0 innings with eight runs allowed on seven hits with three strikeouts. He is now 5-5 on the season. Drew Sheridan went a third of an inning with six runs allowed, followed by Reid McElveen with two-thirds of an inning with four runs allowed and a strikeout. Ryan Conway closed out the final inning with three strikeouts.

For Furman, starter Jay Jackson went eight innings with four hits and one run allowed with six strikeouts to improve to 8-1 on the season. J.P. Goldsberry came in for the ninth inning and faced four batters.

Wofford left six runners on base while Furman stranded eight runners. The Paladins had five doubles on the night and neither team hit a home run. The Terriers were without Keith Munns and Jake Williams due to injury.

The Terriers and Paladins will continue the three-game series on Saturday at 6:00 pm and Sunday at 1:00 pm. Wofford returns home on Tuesday when the Terriers host North Carolina A&T at 6:00 pm.
