Baseball Falls 6-5 To Furman In Extra Innings

GREENVILLE, S.C. – The Wofford College baseball team was defeated 6-5 in ten innings by Furman on Saturday night at Furman Stadium. The Terriers took a 4-0 lead, but Furman took a 5-4 lead in the seventh. Wofford tied it in the ninth, but gave up three hits and a run in the tenth to the Paladins.

Wofford is now 20-19 on the season and 4-10 in the Southern Conference, while Furman is 22-14 overall and 8-6 in the conference.

The Terriers opened the game with a single from Sterling Dye. Kyle Behrendt then hit a double to center field to score Dye. A sacrifice fly to center field from Shane Kirkley scored Behrendt and Wofford had a 2-0 lead.

Wofford added a single in the second from Mo Seay, while Furman’s Brian Hemingway had a single in the bottom of the second. In the third, Sterling Dye had a double for Wofford.

In the top of the fifth, Emre Caglayan led off with a double down the leftfield line. A single from Josh McKinney gave Wofford runners on the corners. A sacrifice fly by Sterling Dye to center field scored Caglayan. Kyle Behrendt added a single and a single from Michael Gilmartin to deep left center loaded the bases with one out. Shane Kirkley added a single to score McKinney, but the inning ended with three runners stranded and a 4-0 Wofford lead.

For Furman in the bottom of the sixth, Bobby Hubbard reached on a fielder’s choice. A double down the right line by Reese Wade was followed by a home run over the right center fence by Jay Jackson to score three runs. Brian Harrison added a double and was brought home by a single from Matt Hemingway to tie the game at 4-4.

The Terriers left two on base in the top of the seventh. Furman led off the bottom of the seventh with a single by Marcus Rose, which was followed by a single from Connor Lind. A groundout by Ryan Lee scored Rose for a 5-4 lead.

Wofford had a single in the eighth from Emre Caglayan, but left him on base at the end of the inning. John Cornely struck out three straight Paladin batters in the bottom of the eighth.

In the top of the ninth, Kyle Behrendt was hit by a pitch and after a ground out and wild pitch, was at third with one out. A sacrifice fly to center by Shane Kirkley scored Behrendt to tie the game at 5-5.

Furman’s Marcus Rose singled in the bottom of the ninth, but was left on base and the game went to extra innings.

To lead off the tenth for Wofford, Neil Robinette hit a triple to right center. Josh McKinney put a ball in play, but Furman second baseman Marcus Rose made an outstanding play on the ball for the third out.

Reese Wade singled for Furman in the bottom of the tenth with one out, which was followed by a single from Jay Jackson. A fielder’s choice by Brian Harrison gave Furman runners on first and third with two out. Matt Hemingway hit a single up the left side to score the winning run.

Wofford starter Ben Austin went 5.2 innings with six hits and four runs allowed and four strikeouts. Pete Noordsy went an inning with two hits and one run allowed. Chip Hunt had one strikeout. John Cornely had five strikeouts in 2.1 innings and allowed three hits and one run. Michael Gilmartin closed the game and allowed one hit.

For Furman, starter Mason Smith went 4.1 innings with eight hits and four runs allowed with three strikeouts. Ian Parry threw 3.2 innings with four hits and no runs allowed and six strikeouts. Nick Karow went two innings with one hit, one run and three strikeouts.

Wofford left ten runners on base, while Furman stranded seven. The game was the fourth of the season to go extra innings for Wofford and the first extra-inning loss. The Terriers were without Keith Munns and Jake Williams due to injury.

The Terriers and Paladins will conclude the three-game series on Sunday at 1:00 pm. Wofford returns home on Tuesday when the Terriers host North Carolina A&T at 6:00 pm.
