Terriers fall in SoCon Semi-Finals

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The No. 3 seeded Wofford men’s tennis team fell 4-1 to the No. 2 seeded Elon Phoenix in the semi-finals of the Southern Conference tournament Saturday morning in Charleston, S.C., falling out of contention for the SoCon Championship title.

Hosted by league foe The Citadel, the Southern Conference tournament only requires that a team capture four match points, starting with doubles action. Doubles competition is called once a team has won two of the three matches.

Elon started the match with an advantage by winning the doubles point with the first two matches in their favor. The Terriers battled in singles play, but the Phoenix pulled an early edge winning at the No. 3 and No.6 position taking a 3-0 lead.

Sophomore George Kernodle captured a win at the No. 2 spot, beating Oscar Podlewski 7-5, 6-4, to give Wofford its only point of the match.

Elon junior Damon Gooch clinched the match for the Phoenix winning 6-2, 6-3 at the No. 1 position over Terrier senior Andrew Stubbs.

No. 2 Elon will attempt to repeat as SoCon tournament champs as they battle the No. 1 seeded Furman Sunday at 10 a.m. in Charleston, S.C.

Wofford finished the season with a 12-11 overall record, while going 5-4 in the SoCon.
