GREENVILLE, S.C. – The Wofford College baseball team lost 13-9 to Furman on Sunday afternoon at Furman Stadium. Wofford tied the game at 7-7 in the sixth inning, but five runs in the eighth for Furman put the game out of reach.
Wofford is now 20-20 on the season and 4-11 in the Southern Conference, while Furman is 23-14 overall and 9-6 in the conference. The Terriers were led by Sterling Dye with three hits in four at bats and Josh McKinney with three RBIs. The Paladins swept the weekend conference series.
The Terriers opened the game with singles from Kyle Behrendt and Sterling Dye. A double to right center by Michael Gilmartin scored both runners. A single to right field by Neil Robinette scored Gilmartin for a 3-0 lead.
In the bottom of the first, Connor Lind hit a triple and was driven in with a ground out to first by Bobby Hubbard for a 3-1 score after the first. Furman opened the bottom of the second with a ground rule double by Reese Wade. Jay Jackson added a single. Jackson got caught in a rundown between first and second, which allowed Wade to steal home for a run and a throwing error gave Jackson second base. A single by Brian Harrison scored two runs and gave the Paladins a 4-3 lead. Bobby Hubbard hit a fly ball to left field for an out, then Marcus Rose was out at third on the throw. The third out was made before Matt Hemingway crossed home plate, but the umpire gave the Paladins a run away for a 5-3 lead after two innings.
For Wofford in the top of the third, Sterling Dye led off with a double and Michael Gilmartin was hit by a pitch. Shane Kirkley added a single to load the bases with no outs. A wild pitch scored Dye from third, but three straight strikeouts stranded two runners for a 5-4 score.
Furman opened the bottom of the third with singles from Ryan Lee and Reese Wade, but no runs were scored. In the bottom of the fourth, Joey Rodgers reached on an error and was driven in by a triple from Marcus Rose. A sacrifice fly to center field by Bobby Hubbard scored Rose to give Furman a 7-4 lead through four innings.
In the top of the sixth, Adam Kearney walked, Mo Seay singled and Emre Caglayan walked for bases loaded with one out for Wofford. A double to center field by Josh McKinney cleared the bases and tied the game at 7-7.
Furman added a run in the bottom of the seventh when Matt Hemingway reached on an error and pushed Campbell Lewis in from third base for an 8-7 lead.
For Wofford in the top of the eighth, Emre Caglayan and Sterling Dye had singles but the Terriers left both runners on base.
Three straight bunts for the Paladins loaded the bases with nobody out to start the bottom of the eighth. A single to right field by Ron Fondu scored one run. A double by Jay Jackson with one out scored two more runs for an 11-7 lead. A single by Matt Hemingway scored two more runs to go up 13-7.
The Terriers got one runner on base in the top of the ninth when Adam Kearney walked with two out. Mo Seay then hit a blast over the left center fence to score two runs to make it a 13-9 final score.
Wofford starter Tom Dolinak threw 5.0 innings with seven runs on nine hits and a strikeout. Pete Noordsy went two innings with three strikeouts and one run on no hits. Chip Hunt threw one innings and allowed five runs on six hits.
For Furman, starter Kevin Gaid went 5.1 innings and gave up seven hits and four runs with seven strikeouts. Chris Newell threw 2.2 innings with four strikeouts and four hits and a run. Spencer Hale threw the ninth inning and allowed two runs on one hit.
Wofford and Furman both left eight runners on base. The Terriers had five errors in the game, the most committed this season by Wofford. Kyle Behrendt led off the order for the Terriers, the first time this season Sterling Dye has not batted at the top. The Terriers were without Keith Munns and Jake Williams due to injury. Wofford has lost six straight conference games.
Wofford returns home on Tuesday when the Terriers host North Carolina A&T at 6:00 pm. On Wednesday, the Terriers will travel to Columbia to play #6 South Carolina.
