Being that the match was played at a division II institute, all matches counted toward the team total score for a possible nine points. In doubles play Barry took the opening matches on court one and two, while the Terriers won on court three. Playing together for the first time this season Alan Donald and Paul Bartholomy defeated Jakub Fejfar and Marcello D’Armas by an 8-4 score to get the Terriers within one heading into singles play.
In singles play however, Barry won matches on all six courts in straight sets. The most intriguing matches of the day came on the courts of five and six. Donald and Michael Schecter, playing on courts five and six, both played a tough first set that they ultimately lost in a tiebreak. In the second set, neither player could rebound from a hard first set loss and both went down in the second set. Donald was defeated 7-6 (7-2), 6-3 while Schecter was downed 7-6 (3), 6-1.
"Today's match was all that I had hoped for. Barry has an oustanding winning tradition and an extremely talented team. Our guys gave everything they had against the #2 ranked team in the country in DII. This match will definatly help us down the road," noted Coach Ray.
The Terriers (0-4, 0-0 SoCon) will take a week off from matches and return to play on the road Saturday ,February 7, in Conway, S.C. against Coastal Carolina and Mount Olive.
On the women’s side, the Terriers continued to battle injuries and only dressed five players in the loss. We lost to a very talented Barry team. We learned a lot individually and as a team from this weekend and are looking forward to our upcoming matches as we will continue to work
hard and improve each day," said Coach Hangstefer.
In the doubles portion of the contest, the Terriers started down 1-0 after defaulting on court three. Playing at the number one position Cayley Wetzig and Sabrina Smyers were defeated 8-4 while fellow teammates Haley Baird and Abby Cunningham were defeated 8-2 on court two.
Trailing 3-0 heading into singles Wofford needed to win all five matches to take the win. Wofford had to again default a match at number six singles to give Barry a 4-0 before play begin. The Terriers were unable to overcome the early deficit, however they continued to fight.
On court five, Betsy Hauer played a hard fought first set but fell in a tiebreaker and eventually lost the match 7-6 (2), 6-0.
Wofford (0-2, 0-0 SoCon) will return to the court on February 11, to take on Gardner-Webb at the Reeves Tennis Center in Spartanburg, S.C. Match time is scheduled for 2pm.
