SPARTANBURG, S.C.- The Wofford men’s tennis team won its third consecutive match on Wednesday afternoon as it downed the Charlotte 49ers 5-2 at the Reeves Tennis Center is Spartanburg, S.C. Wofford pushed its season record to 3-5 overall while Charlotte falls to 1-6.
“We played well today. Charlotte has a bunch of good players and Coach Boykin does a nice job with helping them to play smart points,” stated coach Rod Ray.
Wofford took control early as it swept all three doubles matches to secure the doubles point. Alan Donald and Paul Bartholomy won easily at No. 2 by an 8-3 margin. The freshman duo of Danny Manlow and Stuart Robertson also won comfortably at the No. 1 position 8-4. The closest doubles match of the day came at No. 3 where captain Scott Collins and freshman Tinus Van Wyk held on for an 8-6 win over Mirza Beciragic and Mike Anders. “Our doubles play continues to improve and today it showed,” said Ray.
Charlotte battled back in singles play early to tie the overall score at one as Donald fell on court five. However, the Terriers fought back to win four of the remaining five singles matches to seize control of the match and secure the 5-2 victory. Robertson took down Anders at No. 2 singles 6-4, 6-2 while Manlow won with a single break in each set 6-4, 6-4 at No. 3. Van Wyk defeated Anthony Davidson 7-6, 6-3 along with Paul Bartholomy rolling at No. 6 over Beciragic 6-1, 6-4.
“I am also pleased with our singles play,” noted Ray. “We are playing better singles with each match we play. I am looking forward to what should be another tough match tomorrow.”
The Terriers return to the court Thursday as they travel to USC Upstate for a 3 p.m. match.
