DURHAM, N.C.- Forced to play indoors due to inclement weather, the Wofford men’s tennis team fell to Elon Saturday afternoon 5-2 on the campus of Duke University. With the win, the Phoenix improve to 8-4 overall and 3-0 in Southern Conference play while the Terriers now stand at 6-8 overall and 0-1 in league play.
“Elon did a great job in doubles,” noted head coach Rod Ray. “I am proud of Danny and Scott for getting good wins in singles play, but overall today’s match was a bit of a disappointment. We will be better for our matches next week”
Elon started out strong taking all three doubles matches by at least two service breaks on all three courts. The closet affair of the day came on court No. 1 where Stuart Robertson and Danny Manlow fell to Damon Gooch and Phillip Nemec 8-4. In taking all three doubles matches, Elon won the doubles point and took a 1-0 advantage heading into singles play.
After a subpar effort in doubles, the Terriers responded in singles play and were able to get some positive results. In the most intriguing match of the day, Manlow was able to outlast fellow countryman Oscar Podlewski 1-6, 6-3, 7-6 on court No. 2. Scott Collins was also able to pick up a singles win for the Terriers as he won 6-4, 6-3 over Carlin Murray on court No. 3. The phoenix took the remaining four singles matches in straight sets.
Wofford returns to the court of Saturday March 20 as they play host to the College of Charleston. Match time is scheduled for 2 p.m. at the Reeves Tennis Center.
