DAVIDSON, N.C.- Playing indoors due to rainy conditions, the Wofford women’s tennis team was defeated by the Davidson Wildcats 6-1 on Wednesday afternoon at the Covington Tennis Center. Hailey Baird won her sixth straight singles match for the Terriers who now stand at 2-9 overall and 1-3 in the Southern Conference. Davidson improves to 6-8 overall and 2-2 in league play.
The Terriers fell behind early as Davidson took two out of three doubles matches to pick up the lone doubles point. Baird and Sabrina Smyers were the only Terrier duo to pull out a victory as they defeated Alison Rauh and Romina Clemente 8-5. The Terrier duo of Ashley Lawrence and Cayley Wetzig were downed 8-1 on court No. 1 while Sonia Anand and Betsy Hauer were defeated 8-2 on court No. 3.
Trailing 1-0 heading into singles play, Wofford was only able to pick up one singles victory out of six. On Court No. 3, Baird cruised to her sixstraight singles win as she rolled past Rauh 6-4, 6-3. On court No. 1, Wetzig took Michele Fanney down to the wire but lost a tough three set match by a score of 6-1, 6-7, 6-3. The remaining four Terriers were defeated in straight sets.
Wofford will return to action on Saturday, weather permitted, as they play host to SoCon foe Georgia Southern at 10 a.m. as well as UAB at 3 p.m. at the Reeves Tennis Center.
