SPARTANBURG, S.C.- The Wofford men’s tennis team turned in a sold result on Sunday as they dropped just one match in sweeping Lipscomb 7-0, and Gardner-Webb 6-1, on Sunday in a double header played at the Reeves Tennis Center. Wofford is now 6-7 on the year while Lipscomb falls to 4-5 and Gardner-Webb stands at 3-12.
Wofford started the day off right downing Lipscomb Sunday morning. In doubles, the Terriers took all three doubles matches to take the doubles point and a 1-0 lead heading into singles play. The Terriers won comfortably at No. 2 and 3, while Stuart Robertson and Danny Manlow needed just one service break to win 8-6.
Wofford continued right where it left off in singles taking all six matches in straight sets. Alan Donald was the lone Terrier to be pushed as he won each set with only one break of serve taking the match 6-4, 6-4. Stuart Robertson and Paul Bartholomy each won with identical scores of 6-1, 6-3 on courts one and five.
“I am proud of the way we concentrated and executed against Lipscomb,” noted head coach Rod Ray.
In the second match of the day, the Terriers got a stern test from Gardner-Webb but were able to win by a comfortable margin. Wofford came out one again setting the tone early in doubles play taking all three matches. Donald and Bartholomy rolled 8-1 at No. 2, while Scott Collins and Tinus Van Wyk held on at No. 3 winning 9-7. Manlow and Robertson also won 8-6, helping give the Terriers the doubles point and a 1-0 lead.
The Runnin’ Bulldogs did not go away however in singles play. Although Gardner-Webb won on court No. 1, the Terriers were able to take the next five en route to the win. Collins was pushed to three sets on court No. 2 but prevailed by a score of 6-4, 4-6, 6-3. Manlow also had a strong win on court No. 3 winning 6-3, 7-6. The remaining three Terriers were able to win with relative ease in straight sets.
“This was a tough hard tested match,” stated Ray. “Gardner –Webb is a good team and they came in prepared to win. We stepped up and competed hard in what was a very physical day for us. I am extremely proud of our doubles play and the toughness we showed down the stretch.”
Wofford will return to the court on Saturday as they open Southern Conference play at Elon at 1 p.m.
