Women’s Tennis Dropped By #66 Furman

GREENVILLE, S.C.- The Wofford women’s tennis team fell on the road Wednesday afternoon to the home standing nationally ranked Furman Paladins 7-0. Furman improves to 14-7 overall and 9-0 in the league while the Terriers fall to 1-17 overall and 1-9 in the Southern Conference.
The Paladins came out of the gates quick as they swept all three doubles matches to take a 1-0 advantage. Haley Baird and Sabrina Smyers were downed by Lauren Tomory and Jennifer Betts 8-5 on court No. 2 while Sonia Anand and Kristin Demosthenes were defeated on court No. 3 by the same margin. Cayley Wetzig and Ashley Lawrence were also defeated on court No. 1 by Laura Gioia and Monica Arguello 8-1.
In singles play, the Paladins kept the ball rolling as they took all six singles matches in straight sets. Wetzig lost on court No. 1 to Gioia, ranked 19thin the nation, 6-1, 6-2. Also ranked in the nation, # 80, Arguello downed Lawrence 6-1, 6-1. Baird, in the closest battle of the day, was downed by Jessica Preeg on court No. 3 6-2, 6-2.
The Terriers end the regular season and celebrate senior day on Saturday as they play host to a double header. At 9 a.m. the Terriers take on Washington and Lee followed by Emory at 1 p.m.
