SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford men’s tennis team opened the fall season at the USC Upstate’s Fall Classic Tournament. Michael Schecter won the C flight singles, while Trey McKee won the C flight consolation bracket.
In the A flight, Van Wyk faced off against Furman’s Carl Lundberg and Javier Tori from Upstate matched up against Robertson. Upstate’s Tori defeated Robertson 7-5 and 6-3 to move on to the second round of matches while Van Wyk won the match against Furman’s Lundberg 6-4 and 6-4.
Van Wyk played in the second round against Clemson's Derek DiFazio and was defeated 6-1 and 6-2. DiFazio was the winner of the A singles flight.
In the B flight, Drew Superstein defeated Zach Sprouse of Clemson 7-5, 6-2. Superstein lost 6-3, 6-1 to Zac Rigsby of Clemson in the second round. Alan Donald won his first match 7-6 (4) and 7-6 (4) over Ben Klaas of USC Aiken before also falling to Rigsby 6-3, 6-1. Paul Bartholomy defeated Tyler Snook of Furman 6-1, 6-1 in his first match before dropping a 6-3, 6-2 match to Kevin Galloway of Clemson.
In the C flight, Ryan Byrne was defeated 6-2, 6-2 by Nick Markejwicz of USC AIken 6-2, 6-2. Trey McKee lost 6-1, 6-2 to Parker Sitkowski of Furman. Michael Schecter won his first match 6-3, 6-0 over Ryan Walters of Presbyterian College. In the second round, he downed Parker Sitkowski 6-1, 6-2. In the finals, Schecter won by default. In the C consolation bracket, Trey McKee won three matches to win the bracket.
In doubles, Alan Donald and Paul Bartholomy won the first round 8-3. Stuart Robertson and Tinus Van Wyk were defeated 8-2 by an unattached team. Michael Schecter and Elliott Farmer was defeated 8-3 and Trey McKee and Ryan Byrne advanced by default. Drew Superstein and Tom Wood won their first match 8-4 and second match 8-5 before falling in the finals 8-4 to a team from Furman.
Next weekend, the team will compete in a tournament hosted by the University of Georgia.
