GREENVILLE, S.C. – The Wofford women’s golf team competed in its first tournament of the 2009-10 season at the Lady Paladin Invitational at the par-72, 6,199-yard Furman University Golf Course in Greenville, S.C.

The Terriers finished 15th at the 38th Lady Paladin Invitational after heavy rains caused the final round to be halted due to unplayable course conditions on Sunday.

Sophomore Sarah Hurt led the Terriers with a two-round, 36-hole score of 156 to finish tied for 20th. Hurt, who shot a 79 in the first round, followed that up with a five-over-par 77 in the second and final round.

Junior Alex Rankin finished tied for 69th after shooting an 82-82—164 in the rain-shortened tournament. Rankin was followed by freshman Tarah Taylor, who registered an 85-81—166 in her first collegiate competition. Junior Meredith Few and senior Sarah Herbert rounded out the Terrier contingent with scores of 86-84—170 and 88-89—170, respectively.

As a team, the Terriers shot a 332 in the first round, then improved by eight strokes to record a 324 in the second round. Wofford finished ahead of both Mercer University and Rutgers University in its first tournament of the 2009-10 season.

The cancellation of the third round gave Nova Southeastern, leaders after Saturday’s second round, a four-stroke victory over second place Campbell. Furman claimed third place and Stetson took fourth with East Tennessee State, East Carolina, UNC Greensboro, Kennesaw State, UNC Wilmington and Florida International rounding out the top 10.

Wofford returns to the course September 25-27 as the team competes at the Sea Trail Intercollegiate in Ocean Isle, N.C.
