Men’s Tennis Hosts Their Second Tennis Tournament

Results

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The men’s tennis program played hosts to a few Southern Conference members this weekend at Reeves Tennis Courts, continuing preparation in the preseason. Furman University, Appalachian State University and UNC Asheville made the trip to Spartanburg to partake in the weekend tournament.

The tournament consisted of individual play, with players from each program mixing up competition against each other. Overall, Wofford recorded a perfectly even record, going 15-15 individually in singles and doubles play against the three visiting tennis programs.

Senior Alan Donald produced extremely good results throughout the weekend, winning two of three doubles matches, and also wining two of three in singles play. Donald combined with Tinus Van Wyk and Randall Heffron in doubles play. Both pairs of duos beat competition from UNCA (8-2) and Furman (8-5). Donald displayed strong play in singles, knocking off opposition from Furman (3,6) and UNCA (6,6).

Michael Schecter continued playing on fire this weekend, sustaining his unbeaten streak from last weekend, going 6-0 in the past two weekends at Reeves Courts. Schecter beat competition in straight sets from ASU (4,4) and FU (1,1). The last match on Sunday against Nonnensbrich of UNCA was taken to the edge of the third set. After splitting the first two sets, Schecter used his Nadal-like endurance and hustle to grind down Nonnensbrich, beating the Bulldog 10-1 in the tie-breaker.

Tinus Van Wyk played well on the weekend, using his smooth style and accuracy to his advantage against visiting conference foes. Van Wyk beat opponents from ASU (7-5, 6-2) and Furman (3,3) and nearly went flawless on the weekend after taking his matchup against UNCA’s Waissen to the wire in a tie-breaker. The first two sets were split 5-7 and 7-6, taking the match to a dead even tie-breaker. Van Wyk forced Waissen to a 16-14 finish in the end.

Sophomores Tom Wood and Drew Superstein had strong play on the weekend as well. Wood was undefeated in doubles play, pairing with Elliot Famer and Manoli Lakis to beat Furman 8-5 and Appalachian State 8-6. Superstein had two big wins in singles play, taking victories against Furman (4,0) and Asheville (3,5).

Coach Ray commented on the preseason, saying, “This fall has been very productive to date. I am impressed with the way the players have responded to what has been required of them. Due to persistent dedication their growth in confidence has been remarkable. Short cuts don’t produce quality results and we have earned some quality results by consistently taking the right steps.”

The tournament was the team’s last preseason play before opening up regular season this January against Clemson.
