Whitehead Wins Davidson College Invitational: Terriers Claim Top Team Honors

DAVIDSON, N.C. -- Wofford’s Brent Whitehead shot a 54-hole score of 212, four under par, to win the Davidson College Invitational at the par-72, 7,208 yard, River Run Country Club as the Terriers took the team title with a score of 869, five over par.

Whitehead turned in scores of 71, 70 and 71 for a three-round score of 212 to win the event by one stroke over Radford’s Weston Eklund.  All three of Whitehead’s rounds were under pay for the round. It was the first time this fall a Terrier won finished a tournament atop the standings.

Chandler Brazeal followed with a fifth place finish with scores of 73, 69 and 73 to finish with a score of 215 (-1).  Zach Capps took 15th place with a score of 221.  After struggling through the opening round with a 79, Capps rebounded later in the day by dropping ten strokes to shoot a 69.  He followed that with a final round performance of 73 for a total of 221.  Brent McKenzie finished two strokes back of Capps with a 223 with rounds of 75, 72 and 76.  Mark Joye was the final Terrier in the field as he signed a scorecard with a total of 233.  Joye shot rounds of 77, 76 and 80 in the tournament.  His first score of 77 and Capps final two rounds of 69 and 73 counted towards the Terriers overall team score.

Wofford won the tournament at five over par and finished 13 shots ahead of second place and Southern Conference opponent Western Carolina.  SoCon, foe, College of Charleston took third with a score of 883 (+19).  Other SoCon schools in the tournament where host Davidson, 891 (+27), Elon, 913 (+49) and Appalachian State, 926 (+62).

Wofford will wrap up their fall season with the Hummingbird Intercollegiate in Cashiers, N.C. on November 1.
