Spartanburg, S.C. – The Wofford men’s tennis team home win streak ended at fourteen Thursday afternoon with a loss to Coastal Carolina 4-3. The loss drops the Terriers to 2-3 on the season while Coastal Carolina is off to a 4-1 start.
Coastal Carolina gained an early advantage in the match during doubles play. The Chanticleers were victorious at number two and three doubles to give them a 1-0 advantage heading into singles play.
In singles competition Coastal Carolina won the first two matches at number three and five singles to push their lead to 3-0. The Terriers responded with a win by Paul Bartholomy at number four singles. Bartholomy defeated Dorian Sovic by a score of 7-5, 6-3.
Coastal Carolina clinched the match with a win at number one singles. To close the match the Terriers won the final two matches at number two and six singles. Michael Schecter defeated Peter Billingham 6-4, 6-2 at number six singles. Stuart Robertson rallied to win at number two singles. Robertson lost the first set 3-6 to Ernesto Ramons but came back to win the second set 6-3. The final set was decided over a ten point tie break. Robertson won the final set 10-7.
After the match Wofford Head Coach Rod Ray said “All in all, I think we were just outcompeted by Coastal today. We made some bad mistakes in doubles and they held us accountable. We will definitely learn from today’s match and improve from the experience”.
The Terriers will be back in action on February, 17 when they take on Gardner Webb in Boiling Springs, N.C. at 2:30 pm.
