Clinton, S.C. – The Wofford women’s tennis team earned their first victory of the season Monday afternoon over Presbyterian College by a score of 4-3. The victory improves the Terriers record to 1-5 on the season while Presbyterian falls to 1-3 on the year.
The Presbyterian Blue Hose jumped out to a 1-0 advantage by winning the doubles point two matches to one. Guinn Garcia and Bethany Dyar cruised to victory at number two doubles for the Terriers, defeating Cara Caruso and Megan Davis by a score of 8-0.
In singles action Sabrina Smyers won her number one singles match against Heather Heusel 6-2, 7-5. The victory tied the score at 1-1. Presbyterian responded with a win at number two singles to take a 2-1 advantage. Guinn Garcia tied the score for the Terriers with her victory at number three singles over Cara Caruso 6-0, 6-1.
Presbyterian again took the lead 3-2 with a victory at number four singles. Paige Oelke battled back to defeat Bethany Dyar in three sets. Dyar won the first set 6-4 but Oelke won the final two sets 6-1, 6-4. Lindsay Larkin won her number five singles match against Megan Davis 6-2, 6-2 to even the score at 3-3. In the final match of the day Stephanie Cox sealed the match for the Terriers with a victory at number six singles. Cox defeated Daryl Thompson 6-1, 6-4.
The Terriers will be back in action on February 27 when they will take on East Carolina at 10:00 am at the Reeves Tennis Center on the Wofford College Campus.
