Men’s Tennis downs Presbyterian 5-2


Match Results

Spartanburg, S.C. - The Wofford Terriers men’s tennis team captured its first victory of the season on Wednesday afternoon when they defeated Presbyterian College by a score of 5-2. With the victory, Wofford improves to 1-2 on the season while Presbyterian falls to 0-4 on the season. 

The Terriers jumped out to an early lead in the match capturing the doubles point. The Terriers were led by juniors Alan Donald and Paul Bartholomy who defeated Mathew Martin and Ivan Ho of Presbyterian 8-3 at number one doubles. Tinus Van Wyk and Drew Superstein teamed up to secure the doubles point by defeating Edward Snead and Ryan Walters 8-3 at number three doubles. 

In singles competition Paul Bartholomy continued his stellar play to achieve a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Zachary Sprouse at number four singles. The win gave the Terriers a 2-0 advantage. 

After Presbyterian gained a point at number two singles, the Terriers came back with three victories to secure the match. Michael Schecter defeated Edward Sneed 6-2, 6-0 at number six singles. Drew Superstein defeated Ryan Walters 6-2, 6-4 at number five singles and Alan Donald defeated Ivan Ho 6-4, 6-4 at number three singles. 

The Blue Hose won the last match of the day at number one singles. Matthew Martin defeated Tinus Van Wyk in a hard fought three set match. Van Wyk won the first set 7-6 and Martin claimed the second set 7-6. Due to diminishing light conditions the final set was decided over a ten point tie breaker. Martin won the tie breaker by a score of 10-3. 

After the match Wofford head coach Rod Ray said “Today’s match represents a pretty good effort for us. Presbyterian is well coached and they played with pride and determination. We did some things really well today and there other areas that we are going show a lot of improvement on during the next several weeks. All in all, I thought our effort level was pretty good”. 

Wofford will return to action on Saturday February 6th when they will have two matches. The first match will be against Brevard College at 11:00 am the second match will feature North Greenville at 3:00 pm both matches will be played at the Reeves Tennis Center on the Wofford College campus.
