Statesboro, Ga. – The Wofford men’s tennis team had to come back from an early deficit to defeat Southern Conference foe Georgia Southern. The victory evens the Terriers record at 5-5 and 1-0 in the conference while Georgia Southern falls to 4-8 on the year.
Georgia Southern jumped out to an early lead winning all three doubles matches to take a 1-0 advantage heading into singles play. The Terriers responded by winning five out of six singles matches to win the match.
Alan Donald evened the score for the Terriers by winning his number three singles match against Gregory Bekkers 6-4, 6-3. Georgia Southern took the lead again (2-1) by winning the number two singles match. Tinus Van Wyk tied the score at two when he won his number one singles match against Jayraj Jadeja 6-4, 3-6, 6-3. Drew Superstein gave the Terriers their first lead when he won his number six singles match against Edio Castanhel 6-4, 7-6. The seconds set went into a back and forth tie break that Superstein was able to win 10-8. Paul Bartholomy clinched the match for Wofford with a victory at number four singles. Bartholomy defeated Matthijs Verdam in three sets. Verdam won the first set 6-3 but Bartholomy came back to win the next set 7-6 with a 7-5 tie breaker. Bartholomy won the final set 6-3. In the last match of the day Michael Schecter defeated Justin Flynn in a three set match. Schecter won the first set 7-5 but lost the second set 5-7. Schecter won the final set 6-3.
After the match head coach Rod Ray said “Winning on the road against Georgia Southern was a great effort for us. This was hard fought 4 and 1/2 hour epic battle between two teams that both competed hard”.
The Terriers will be back in action on Saturday, March, 13 when they will take on Yale in Charleston, S.C.
