Spartanburg, S.C. - The men’s tennis team finished the weekend long tournament hosted by Wofford's neighbors, USC Upstate. The squad participated in the three-day long tournament, beginning on Friday, with the tournament concluding Sunday afternoon.
The tournament was highlighted by a strong core of Wofford seniors showcasing positive production and senior leadership.
Senior Paul Bartholomy defeated his opponent in the first round, advancing to the second round to face Juan Bolona of Clemson University. Bartholomy edged out his opponent in the second set (6-3) taking the match to three sets, but lost to the Tiger 6-2 in the last set.
Alan Donald played a very good tournament, having success against competition in the back draft on Saturday and Sunday. He commented on the Terrier tennis team stating, “I am very excited about the year. We are going to have a very good team this year and are going to do very well competing in the SoCon.”
Senior Michael Schecter displayed some of the finest tennis he has played with his time at Wofford on the weekend. Schecter made it to the round of eight, easily defeating Ben Klaas of USC Aiken early Saturday (6-0 6-1). Schecter faced Moritz Dettinger of Clemson University in the round of eight, and beat the Tiger 6-2 in the first set. The senior fought hard to take advantage in the next two sets, but Dettinger slipped by to advance to the quarterfinals.
Tom Wood displayed the best results in the tournament, making it all the way to the quarter finals, eventually losing to the player who won the entire “Flight C” bracket. Wood defeated two foes during Saturday’s play, beating Mike Owens of Lenoir-Rhyne (6-1 6-0) and Rafael Milhati of Augusta State (6-4 6-3).
The men’s tennis program will continue practicing throughout the week in preparation of the upcoming tournament. The Terriers will travel to Athens, Ga. to face an array of teams from the southeast. The tournament will last all weekend, from Sept. 24-26th.
