Men’s Tennis Finishes Tournament, Bartholomy Advances to Championship Final

Southern Intercollegiate Championship Results

ATHENS, Ga. - After three days of play in the Southern Intercollegiate Tournament, the men’s tennis program looks toward the last play of the championship, participating in the final matches of the 43rd annual showing of the tennis tournament hosted by the University of Georgia.

Coach Ray’s team faced multiple quality programs from around the Southern part of the United States. The tennis program thrived throughout the first few days of the tournament and represented Wofford College well, garnering respect throughout the tennis community.

Wofford’s most successful player in the tournament has been senior Paul Bartholomy. Bartholomy defeated every opponent he faced in the first three days of matchups, and currently stands 3-0, competing for the championship title in singles draws (Div. III). Bartholomy was awarded a bye in the first round, and faced Benjamin Wirth of Liberty in the second round. He defeated Wirth in straight sets, moving on to the third round 6-3, 6-2. Bartholomy faced Garrison Luduca of Samford Saturday morning on the second day of play. The match drew steady play from both athletes having the second set be decided by a tie-breaker and eventually taking the match to three sets. Bartholomy finished strong, beating the Bulldog 7-5, 6-7 (5), 6-4.

Moving on to quarter finals, the senior tennis player took on Cedric DeZutter of Memphis. Bartholomy easily won the first set 6-2, and ultimately won the second set after taking it to tiebreaker (7-6 [3]). The semi-finals were held Sunday and Bartholomy faced off against the Phoenix of Elon, Carlos Arboleda. The Charlotte native, Bartholomy, handled the pressure situation smoothly, pressing past Arboleda in straight sets 6-3, 6-4. The championship final will be held Sunday evening.

Another senior, Michael Schecter continued to be on fire after last weekend’s tournament in Upstate, showing success in the first couple days of the tournament. Schecter advanced out of the first two rounds and played Hernus Peiters of Georgia for a spot into the quarterfinals of singles draws (Div II). Schecter showed strength during the match, but was nudged out by the Bulldog in two sets.

Coach Ray’s squad boasted an undefeated record in consolation draws. The Terriers won every match played in the back draws. Stuart Robertson, Tinus Van Wyk and Alan Donald beat every opponent faced and await play in the final matches of the tournament.
