SPARTANBURG, S.C.- The men’s tennis program played their first home match of the season Saturday afternoon, but were unable to push past Winthrop University. Winthrop only lost one doubles match and pushed past Wofford in every singles match, beating the Terriers 7-0. Wofford drops to 0-3 with the loss. The win improves Winthrop’s record to 2-2 on the season.
Wofford’s strongest play came from seniors Alan Donald and Paul Bartholomy in doubles. The duo easily won their doubles match, defeating Guy Kubi and Liran Levy 8-1.
The Eagles were able to narrowly edge past duos Stuart Robertson and Tinus Van Wyk at the No. 1 spot and Randall Heffron and Drew Superstein at the No. 3 position with an 8-6 score in both doubles match.
The Eagles picked up every singles win on the day. Van Wyk was defeated by Sergey Belov at the No. 1 position (6-4, 6-4) and Robertson lost to Liran Levy (7-5, 6-1) at the No. 3 slot.
Paul Bartholomy also lost in straight sets (6-3, 6-2) to Guy Kubi at the No. 5 position and Superstein lost to Yuta Hirokawa at the No. 6 slot despite playing a close first set (7-6, 6-2).
Seniors Michael Schecter and Alan Donald took their singles match to the edge, splitting their first two sets before falling in the third set.
Schecter fought back after losing the first set 6-3, and defeated Dejon Bivens 6-2 in the second set. Bivens pulled away in the third set, pushing past Schecter 6-4 in the third set.
Donald started strong winning his first set 7-6. Winthrop’s Nadav Ruppin got hot in the second and third set, winning the last two sets 6-3 and 6-4.
The men’s tennis team will play at home against Lees-Mcrae February 5th. The match is set to start at 1:00 p.m. in the Reeves Tennis Center.
