ELON, N.C. – Two second-half goals by Elon’s Kim Gardner doomed the Wofford women’s soccer team, as the Terriers fell to the Phoenix by a 2-1 score Sunday afternoon. The Terriers drop to 8-5-1 overall, and 2-5-1 in Southern Conference play.
The first half was a defensive struggle for both squads, as Wofford was only able to attempt one shot throughout the first 45 minutes of play, keeping the match scoreless at halftime.
The Terriers struck first, as Maureen Buff was able to send the ball past Elon goalkeeper Kate Murphy in the 51st minute. Anne Phillips was credited with the assist.
The Phoenix answered back in the 60th minute, when Gardner scored following a shot by Catherine Brinkman that deflected off of the post.
Gardner scored once again in the 81st minute, putting the ball into the back of the net from the top left side of the box following a crossing pass from Kimmie Krauss.
Wofford tried to produce the tying goal during the closing minutes of the half, as Morris and Emily Bougas each put a shot on goal, but neither were able to make their way past Murphy.
Erika Christensen took the loss for the Terriers with three saves while facing a total of 12 shots. Murphy was awarded the win for Elon, tallying five saves while facing seven total shots.
The Terriers will return to action this Friday evening as they host The Citadel. The match is schedule for a 7:00 p.m. start time at Snyder Field.
