Terriers Edge Out Presbyterian College, 4-3

CLINTON, S.C. – The Wofford men’s tennis team held strong for a close 4-3 win over Presbyterian College. Alan Donald and Michael Schecter grabbed a critical 9-8 win in doubles to earn the first point and Stuart Robertson sealed the victory for Wofford after winning a singles match that went to a tie-breaker in the third set. The Terriers improve to 2-4, while the Blue Hose fall to 4-4.

Tinus Van Wyk and Stuart Robertson began the afternoon with a win in doubles, defeating Andrew Brigham and Rafael Berghaus 8-3 at the No. 1 spot. The doubles match at the No. 2 position foreshadowed how competitive the rest of the match would play out, as Alan Donald and Michael Schecter posted a 9-8 win over Gonzalo Asis and Nathan Crocker. The second doubles win gave the Terriers the overall doubles point and a 1-0 lead.

The two teams split the first two singles matches. Drew Superstein was first off the courts after losing at the No. 5 slot and Van Wyk helped Wofford to a 2-1 advantage, defeating Andrew Brigham in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2.

Donald set the Terriers up for the win after breezing past Kenneth Mooney, 6-2, 6-4 at the No. 4 position. Robertson pushed Wofford ahead for the victory after a match that was taken to the wire. Robertson split the first two sets, winning the first set 6-1 and giving up the second set 1-6 to Presbyterian’s Berghaus. The third set battled to a 6-6 tie after Berghaus pushed past four straight match points by Robertson. Robertson won the tie-breaker with an 8-6 finish.

The Blue Hose continued to fight in the last two matches. Sprouse and Mills were able to beat Wofford’s Schecter and Tom Wood to end the match with a 4-3 finish. “Presbyterian played us tough today,” commented Coach Ray after the match. “I'm impressed with their spirit and determination and know firsthand that they have a good team. We needed to experience a match like this to grow. Without a doubt, we are turning a corner with several good things happening today.”

The Terriers next match will be at home versus UNC Charlotte. The match is set to start at 2:30 pm at Reeves Tennis Center.
