Women’s Tennis Defeats Presbyterian College, 6-1

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The women’s tennis team dominated the courts at Reeves Tennis Center Friday afternoon after only allowing Presbyterian College one singles win. The Terriers beat the Blue Hose 6-1, while Julia Paulson improved her singles win streak to five and Emilia Milovanovic grabbed her sixth singles win of the season. The victory gives the Terriers a 5-2 record and the loss drops the Blue Hose to 5-2.

Coach Hangstefer’s squad grabbed the early 1-0 advantage after winning every doubles match and earning the doubles point. Haley Baird and Guinn Garcia defeated Christina Limantoro and Paige Oelke 8-6 at the No. 1 position. Julia Paulson and Sarah Evans swept past Cara Caruso and Courtney Gardner with an 8-0 victory at the No. 2 spot and Emilia “Frenchie” Milovanovic and Samantha Sullivan beat Patricia Alves and Lindsay Krause at the No. 3 slot. Baird and Garcia lead the team as a pair in doubles wins with five and Evans individually has six doubles wins with two different partners.

Milovanovic was first off the courts in singles, grabbing her sixth singles win of the season after defeating Limantoro at the No. 1 spot. Baird quickly followed with a 6-0, 6-1 triumph over Caruso at No. 3 and Evans sealed the victory for the Terriers at the No. 4 with a 6-1, 6-2 win against Alves. Evans has five singles wins on the season, tying her for second with Garcia and Paulson for singles wins on the year.

Paulson pushed past Gardiner at the No. 5 spot after taking her match to a super tie-breaker, winning 6-3, 2-6, 10-8. Stephanie Cox also took her match to a super tie-breaker, but came up short after a close finish against Krause, 6-3, 1-6, 10-8. Garcia was last off the courts after defeating Oelke in straight sets, 6-2, 7-5.

“The girls played really well today. They came out focused and hungry for a win. Presbyterian put up a great fight and really made us work to get the win today,” commented Coach Hangstefer after the match. The win keeps Wofford undefeated against Presbyterian College in women’s tennis history. The Terriers are winning the overall series 4-0.

The Terriers next match will be at home versus South Carolina State, February 21st. Wofford is set to take on the Bulldogs at 1:00 pm.
