Men’s Tennis Loses Contest to USC Upstate, 5-2

SPARTANBURG, SC – The Terriers traveled down the road to USC Upstate to face the Spartans in men’s tennis Tuesday afternoon. Drew Superstein and Tom Wood won their singles matches, earning the Terriers two points in the match. Wofford finished 5-2 against the Spartans, dropping Coach Ray’s team to a 3-5 overall record. Upstate improves to 3-8 on the season.

Upstate took the early lead after grabbing wins in every doubles match. Alan Donald and Michael Schecter finished first, suffering an 8-1 loss to Gonzalo Blanco and Edgar Rodriguez at the No. 2 spot.

Upstate’s Marco Linconir and Ignacio Velez defeated Jack Seiffert and Drew Superstein 8-4 at the No. 3 slot. Tinus Van Wyk and Stuart Robertson held a lead up until the fourth game, when Ramiro Blanco and Matias Di Pasquale took over the lead and finished with an 8-6 victory.

Van Wyk was first off the courts in singles. The South African native held close in both sets, but was unable to take an advantage over Rodriguez, losing 6-4, 6-3.

Superstein earned the Terriers first point after defeating Linconir 6-2, 7-5 at the No. 5 position. Superstein was down 1-2 in the first set and then won five straight games to push for the win. In the second set he overcame Linoconir after being down 4-5.

Upstate put themselves into position for the win after G. Blanco beat Robertson 6-4, 6-3 at the No. 3 slot. Toom Wood kept the Terrier hopes alive at the No. 6 slot, beating Gianluca Paino, in straight sets 7-5, 7-5. The competition at the No. 6 position was tight, but Wood held control of the match the entire time. Wood had the lead for the entirety of the two sets, besides the first game of the first set.

The result of the match fell into the hands of seniors Schecter and Donald. The two captains were last off the courts and had to win their matches to grab the win for the Terriers. Both Schecter and Donald split the first two sets in their matches.

Donald won the first set 6-4 and lost the second set to Di Pasquale, 6-3 at the No. 4 position. In the third set Di Pasquale pushed for the win, 6-0, grabbing the fourth point and overall win for the Spartans.

Schecter finished last after winning the first set, 6-4, against R. Blanco and lost the second 6-0 at the No. 2 slot. Schecter battled in the third set, but ended with a 6-2 loss.

The Terriers open up conference play in their next match against UNC Greensboro. The match is set for March 5th at 1:00 p.m. in Greensboro.
