SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The men’s tennis team soared over King College, 7-0, in their first win of the season. The Terriers swept past the Tornado in singles and doubles competition, defeating every King College competitor in straight sets. The victory gives Coach Rod Ray’s program a 1-3 record on the season. The match was King College’s first match of the season, and the loss drops the Tornado to 0-1.
The Terriers returned to Reeves Tennis Center after having their last two matches against Lees-McRae and Gardner-Webb postponed due to weather. The afternoon opened up with Wofford grabbing their first doubles point of the season. Seniors Alan Donald and Michael Schecter started the day’s nine match win streak, defeating Jose Avila and Patrick Jones 8-1 at the No. 2 position.
Stuart Robertson and Tinus Van Wyk continued the winning trend, beating Oriol Mirallas and Pablo Vidal 8-4 at the No. 1 slot. Jack Seiffert and Drew Superstein finished up the doubles competition with an 8-1 victory over Seth Hale and Eirikur Magnusson at the No. 3 spot. The win gave Seiffert his first win as a Terrier in the first start of his collegiate career.
Superstein was the first off the courts in singles play, defeating Seth Hale in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0. Schecter closely followed, beating Oriol Mirallas in straight sets as well. Schecter lost the first game, but didn’t allow Mirallas any other games the rest of the time, shutting down Mirallas, 6-1, 6-0.
Donald sealed the win for the Terriers, pushing past Patrick Jones, 6-0, 6-1. The victory gives Donald his second singles win of the season. Robertson beat Pablo Vidal at the No. 3 position in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1. Van Wyk played Jose Avila at the No. 1 slot and defeated the opposition 6-4, 6-4. Tom Wood finished the day at the No. 6 spot with a straight set victory over Eirikur Magnusson, 6-0, 6-1. Superstein, Schecter, Robertson, Van Wyk, and Wood grabbed their first singles wins of the season with the victory.
