Men’s Tennis Overcomes Gardner-Webb in a 4-3 Finish

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The men’s tennis team overcame losing the doubles point early in the match against Gardner-Webb, winning four singles matches to capture a 4-3 win over the Runnin’ Bulldogs. The Terriers had key singles wins from seniors Michael Schecter and Alan Donald, as well as Stuart Robertson and Tom Wood. The victory improves Coach Ray’s team to 4-5 on the season with a 3-1 home record. Gardner-Webb falls to 5-7 on the year.

Wofford split the first two doubles matches against the Bulldogs at the No. 1 and 2 positions. Donald and Schecter paired up against Julien Belair and Roman Piftor and won 8-4. Tinus Van Wyk and Stuart Robertson took the loss to GWU’s Andrew Carter and Andrew Veeder, 8-5. The doubles point came down to the No. 3 spot and Wofford's duo, Jack Seiffert and Drew Superstein. The pair was unable to topple GWU’s Korhan Ates and Adam Knutsson-Sunblad, losing the match in a close 9-8 finish.

The Bulldogs took the first point, but only grabbed two wins in singles. Van Wyk faced off against Belair at the No. 1 spot and took his match to three sets. After winning the first match 6-2, Van Wyk fell short in the second and third set, losing 6-3 and 6-2.

Schecter earned the win at the No. 2 position against Ates. The senior captain pushed past Ates in straight sets, winning both sets 6-4. Robertson also won in straight sets at the No. 3 slot. He defeated Knutsson-Sunblad 6-1, 6-4. Donald grabbed his team high sixth singles victory of the year against GWU’s Veeder. Donald currently has the best singles record on the team (6-3) after beating Veeder in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4.

The Bulldogs grabbed their second singles win against Wofford’s Superstein. Superstein played in a tight match against Piftor, taking his match to three sets and forcing the second and third sets to 6-7, 7-5 finishes. The final score for Supertein’s match was 6-1, 6-7, 7-5. Tom Wood started at the No. 6 spot for the Terriers and grabbed his third singles match win in a row. Wood currently is on a winning streak after beating opposition fromUNC Charlotte and USC Upstate. Wood defeated Matthew Parker in three sets, 6-2, 6-7, 6-2.

"Gardner –Webb put the pressure on us by winning the doubles point and showing determination throughout the singles," commented Coach Ray after the match. "I am impressed with the courage that many of our players showed in today’s victory."

The Terriers will start conference play in their next match against UNC Greensboro. The match is set for March 5 at 1:00 p.m.
