Terriers Finish in Fifth at Coca-Cola Wofford Invitational

SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- The Wofford men’s golf team moved up to one spot to finish in fifth place with a score of 880 in the 23rd Coca-Cola Wofford Invitational host at The Country Club of Spartanburg, a par-72 6,648 yard course.

The Terriers, whose 279 in the second round of day one was the second lowest team score of the tournament.  Richmond, who finished in second with a score of 863, opened the tournament with score 279, tying the tournament record for lowest team opening round score, which was set by Clemson in 1993.

East Tennessee State rallied from down nine strokes after the first day with a 284 in the final round to win the event in back-to-back years.  They finished with an 858 over the three rounds and won by five strokes.

On the individual side, Jacobo Pastor, from Charleston Southern, claimed the top spot with a 70-69-71--210 to win by two strokes over ETSU’s Lucas Armstrong, who carded a 71-70-71--212, and Richmond’s Nick Austin, who shot a 67-73-72--212. Wofford’s Mark Joye took fourth with a 72-67-74--213. Samford’s Bill Nabors (71-70-73--214), Campbell’s Vaita Guillaume (74-65-75--214), ETSU’s Patrick Spraggs (72-69-73--214) and Radford’s Paul Woodson (65-75-74-214) finished in a tie for fifth place. Guilaume’s second round score was one shot off of the tournament record low round of 64 set by Bobby Cochran of Florida State 1994.  Woodson’s 65 tied a tournament record for a opening round score, which was set by Clemson’s Danny Ellis in 1993.

For Wofford Joye was followed by Brent Whitehead who shot a 75-70-72--217, and by Zach Capps 77-71-74--222. Chandler Brazeal had his second round and third round score of 71 and 77 counted towards the team total.  Brazeal shot a 79 in the opening round to finish with a 227. Charles Moore had his first round score of 78 added to the team’s total, fired a 74 in round two and an 80 in round three for a score of 232.

Wofford will close the season at the Southern Conference Championship April 17-19 in Florence, S.C.
