DAVIDSON, N.C. – The Wofford women’s tennis team traveled to Davidson for their final Southern Conference road match and lost a battle that was decided ultimately by the doubles point. The Terriers were able to dominate three of the singles matches, but Davidson pulled away with three tough singles wins and the double point to earn the 4-3 win.
Coach Hangstefer’s squad falls to 10-13 (2-7 SoCon) on the year with the loss. Davidson earns their first Southern Conference win with the victory and improves to 5-17 (1-7 SoCon) on the season.
Wofford began the afternoon with doubles play in Davidson’s Knobloch Tennis Center indoor facilities and fell short in all three matches. At No. 1, Emilia Milovanovic and Haley Baird were edged past in an 8-6 finish against Davidson’s Brites Moniz-Soares and Nisha Crouser. Wofford’s Sarah Evans and Julia Paulson narrowly lost with the same score, 8-6, against Davidson’s Alison Rauh and Stephani Synn. Davidson jumped to the 1-0 lead after grabbing their third doubles win against Wofford’s No. 3 duo, Lucy Schermerhorn and Samantha Sullivan.
Wofford staged a comeback in singles after winning three matches in singles. Each match was won in straight sets. Sarah Evans and Meagan Laframboise had the strongest finishes after only giving up a total of five games each in their matches. Evans played Davidson’s Crouser at No. 3 and won 6-1, 6-4. Laframboise went on to beat Elise Held 6-4, 6-1 at No. 6.
The Terriers’ third point came from Lucy Schermerhorn on court five. Schermerhorn controlled her match the entire time, winning 6-4, 6-3 against Davidson’s Samantha Galainena.
Wofford had two singles matches that nearly gave the Terriers the final fourth point and overall win, but both Wofford athletes lost in an arduous third set. At No. 1, Milovanovic won her first set 6-3, but lost her second 6-3, sending the match to a third set. Davidson’s Alison Rauh came out with a 7-5 to win the match.
Baird finished in the same fashion, winning her second set 6-2 after losing her first set 6-3. In the third set, the senior captain lost to Davidson’s Stephani Synn 7-5. Davidson went on to win the No. 4 singles match as well, giving them the overall 4-3 win.
The Terriers will wrap up their 2011 season this Friday, April 15th against the College of Charleston. Be sure to come to Reeves Tennis Center at 3:00 p.m. to celebrate the final home match and Senior Day.
