Men’s Golf Takes Sixth at SoCon Championship

Brazeal, Whitehead Earn All-SoCon Honors

FLORENCE, S.C. -- The Wofford men’s golf team ended their season with an 882 (+18) at the Southern Conference Men’s Golf Championship in sixth place at the par 72, 7,062-yard Country Club of Florence. Brent Whitehead and Chandler Brazeal earned All-SoCon honors.

The Terriers opened the championship with a 295 on day one leaving them in a tie for sixth place, but they responded on day two score of 289, which was the third lowest team total for the tournament.  In the third and final round, the Terriers shot a 298 to finish six shots behind the fifth place team, College of Charleston, and four strokes ahead of the seventh place team, Elon.

Georgia Southern claimed the championship and NCAA automatic regional bid with a score of 861 (-3). UNC Greensboro finished second, 866 (+2), with Chattanooga taking third, 867 (+3).  Samford, 875 (+11), took fourth, C of C, 876 (+12), finished fifth and Wofford took sixth with their 882 (+12).  Elon, 886 (+22), Davidson, 887 (+23), Western Carolina, 895 (+31), Appalachian State, 897 (+33) and Furman, 900 (+36) rounded out the field.

On the individual side, Wofford was led by Brent Whitehead who shot a 71-72-72--217 (+1) over the three rounds and finished tied for 11th.  Chandler Brazeal, 75-69-75--219 (+3), tied for the lowest round of the tournament on day two with a 69, finished tied for 15th.  Zach Capps, 75-74-73--222 (+6) signed his scorecard in a tie for 25th, while Mark Joye, 74-74-77--225 (+9), and Charles Moore, 75-74-76--225 (+9) both finished tied for 37th.

Davidson’s Richard Fountain took the top individual spot with a 68-72-67--207 (-9), while Georgia Southern’s Lewis Gruber 68-72-68--208 (-8) and Logan Blondell, 72-70-70--212 (-4) finished in second and third respectively.  

The Terriers placed two members on the SoCon All-Conference Team, Brazeal and Whitehead.  Brazeal also earned top freshman honors garnering SoCon Freshman of the Year.
