CHATTANOOGA, TENN. – The men’s tennis team opened up the first round of the Southern Conference Tennis Tournament against Davidson College and fell to the Wildcats 4-1. The No. 10 seed Davidson upset the No. 7 seed Wofford and will advance to the second round to face the No. 2 seed, College of Charleston, tomorrow at 3:00 p.m. The tournament is being hosted at Chattanooga on the Champions Club Tennis Courts.
Coach Ray’s team concludes the season with an overall record of 8-13. The Terriers finished with a 4-6 standing in the Southern Conference. Despite losing to the Terriers 4-3 during the regular season, Davidson takes the win and improves to 7-17 on the season.
The Wildcats jumped to the early lead after earning the doubles point. Davidson’s Joe Schafer and Calum Gee beat Wofford’s No. 1 duo, Tinus van Wyk and Stuart Robertson, 8-5. Davidson secured the doubles point after pushing past Wofford’s Michael Schecter and Jack Seiffert 8-2 on court three. With the doubles point already decided Alan Donald and Paul Bartholomy’s match was ended when the score was 5-4 in Wofford’s favor.
Schecter earned the lone point of the day for the Terriers at the No. 2 singles slot. Schecter played Chris Mark in what would be the last match of his career and dominated Davidson’s Chris Mark in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4.
Davidson tallied their three singles points at the No. 1, 4 and 6 positions to earn the overall 4-1 upset over the Terriers. Davidson’s Schafer beat Van Wyk 6-4, 6-3 at No. 1 and Wofford’s Donald lost 6-0, 6-3 against Calum Gee. Paul Bartholomy fell to Davidson’s Ethan Kallick 6-4, 7-5 to give the Wildcats their fourth point. Stuart Robertson and Drew Superstein’s matches were unfinished since Davidson had already secured the win.
The Terriers had three players play in their final matches as Terriers this afternoon, including Alan Donald, Paul Bartholomy and Michael Schecter. Donald led the team in singles wins this year with nine. Schecter was only one win behind with the second most singles wins at eight. Despite an injury that benched Bartholomy for nearly two months, Bartholomy and Donald finished second on the team as a pair in doubles with seven wins.
