ELON, N.C. – The Wofford men’s tennis team traveled to Elon to face their Southern Conference opposition in the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center Saturday afternoon. After contesting the Elon Phoenix to a tight finish in doubles, the Phoenix scrambled to win the doubles point. Elon showed strength in singles though, winning each match and beating the Terriers 7-0.
Wofford drops to a 7-10 (3-4 SoCon) record and Elon improves to a 15-6 (7-1 SoCon) standing after the victory. The Phoenix had an eight match win streak, including seven SoCon wins in a row, before falling to UNC Greensboro this past Wednesday, 4-3.
The Terriers showcased their best performances in doubles play, forcing the No. 1 match into a tie-breaker and winning the No. 2 match in a close finish. Wofford’s Tinus Van Wyk and Stuart Robertson faced the No. 49 ranked Philip Nemec and Chase Helpingstine at the top spot and took the match to 8-8. In the tie-breaker, Elon was able to narrowly push past Van Wyk and Robertson with a 7-4 score.
Alan Donald and Paul Bartholomy faced Elon’s Alberto Rojas and Cody S-MacDowell at the No. 2 doubles slot. The Terriers finished strong against the Phoenix duo, beating them 9-7. Elon was able to grab the doubles point after beating Wofford’s Michael Schecter and Jack Seiffert 8-4 at No. 3
The Phoenix took control of the match in singles, sweeping each contest. Donald put up the toughest fight after taking his match to a super tie-breaker. Donald won the first set 7-6(4), but lost the second set 6-2. In the super tie-breaker, Helpingstine finished with a 10-5 score to win the match. The remainder of the singles matches were lost in straight sets.
The Terriers return home for a Southern Conference match-up tomorrow, April 10th against the Chattanooga Mocs. The match is scheduled to start at 1:00 p.m. in Reeves Tennis Center.
