RADFORD, VA. -- Chandler Brazeal finished the NCAA Regional on the 7,685 yard par-72 Pete Dye River Course of Virginia Tech with a final round score of 80 (+8) to finish with a total of 239.
Brazeal finished the tournament in 70th place with a 78-81-80--239 (+23).
He opened his final round on hole ten for the second straight day. After starting with two bogeys, Brazeal had a par on 12 and a birdie on 13, his third birdie of the tournament. But he followed with bogeys on 14, 15 and 18 to card a 40 over his first nine holes.
He opened the back nine with a par on hole one. Over the next three holes, he had two double bogeys and a par before finishing the round with five straight pars to earn his final round score of 80.
Brazeal, the Southern Conference Freshman of the Year will end his season with a 73.52 stroke average.
On day two, Brazeal slipped to tied for 67th overall after an 81 (+9) second round.
Brazeal started the round on the back nine, with three bogeys and a double bogey to jump to +5 five for the round after four holes. After three straight pars, Brazeal finished his front nine with a double bogey on 17 and a bogey on 18.
On the back nine, Brazeal had three straight pars, followed by a birdie on the fourth hole. He finished the round with four pars and a bogey to card an 81 and a 159 over the first two rounds.
Brazeal finished with an opening round 78 (+6) was tied for 54th in NCAA Regional.
“I was a little rusty, but it was pretty fun out there today,” Brazeal said. “Everything was slightly, and I just couldn’t get the ball in the hole. The course is long and tight. It is weird because it looks like an open course, but the fairways are tight and narrow. If you miss you were in deep rough.”
He opened the round just before 10:30 a.m. eastern time with three straight pars, before suffering back-to-back bogeys on a holes three, a 497 yard par-4, and four, a 235 yard par-3. He finished the front nine with a three more pars and a birdie on the 426 yard par-4 eighth hole with a 37 (+1) at the turn.
Brazeal opened the back nine with a bogey on the 424 yard par-4 tenth hole and a bogey on 583 yard par-5 12th. He rattled off three straight pars on 13, 14 and 15 before closing the round with bogeys on the par-5 590 yard 16th hole, par-3 243 yard 17th hole and par-4 496 yard 18th hole to complete the round.
“I got frustrated and lost focus the last three holes and the wind picked up so it made those holes tough,” Brazeal said of his final three holes.
“He shot a 78 on a really hard golf course,” head coach Vic Lipscomb said. “He drove the ball really well. For him not picking up a club in a week he did real well. I think he is going to be alright.”
