SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford men’s soccer team was defeated by Furman 4-3 in double-overtime in the final home game of the season Saturday night. The loss drops the Terriers to 9-8-0 this season and 2-4-0 in the Southern Conference, while the Paladins improve to 12-3-3 overall and 4-2-1 in conference play.
Wofford did not waste any time, taking a lead in the 3
rd when Andrew Drennan earned his first career assist on Ryan Hurst’s second goal of the season. Drennan made a great diving save then punted the ball downfield where Hurst was able to carry the ball past the charging Furman goalkeeper, Sven Lissek, and place the ball into the open net. However, Wofford’s lead would be short lived as the Paladins would equalize just six minutes later. Danny Hojaij delivered a perfect corner into the box and Michael Gandier was able to head it past Drennan to tie the score at 1-1. Furman would find the back of Wofford’s net again off a corner in the 17
th minute to take a 2-1 lead. Martin Ontiveros sent the ball to the near post and Walker Zimmerman scored with a header for his sixth goal this season. Despite giving up two quick goals, the Terriers kept fighting and were given a great chance to equalize when Wofford was award a penalty kick in the 44
th minute. The foul occurred on a corner kick after a Furman defender pulled Forrest Lasso to the ground as he went up for a header. Alex Hutchins calmly walked to the spot and scored his twelfth goal in the bottom left corner to tie the game 2-2. At the break, Furman held the edge in shots (12-5) and corners (6-2) but it was not enough to separate the teams.
In the second half, it took only six minutes for the game’s fifth goal to be scored. Coleton Henning found the back of the net off other corner to give Furman a 3-2 lead. Martin Ontiveros sent the kick into the box and found an unmarked Coleton Henning who scored with a well struck header. Finding themselves behind again, Wofford went back on the attack and pushed hard to score an equalizer. The Terriers would find it in the 74
th minute when Nestor Jaramillo assisted on Forrest Lasso’s fourth goal of the year. Jaramillo sent a free kick into the box that Lasso was able to flick past the keeper and in at the far post. Wofford nearly won the game in the 88
th minute but Lissek was able to save Billy Padula’s shot from just over ten yards out. Regulation would end with both teams tied at three despite Furman holding a decisive advantage in shots (22-9) and corner kicks (10-3).
In the first overtime period, the Terriers dominated play as they outshot the Paladins (4-0) and took the period’s only corner. Connor Davis almost gave Wofford the comeback victory in the 99
th minute but Lissek was able to make an unbelievable diving stop to keep the score tied. After 100 minutes of soccer, there was nothing to separate the two teams and they got sent for overtime number two. Just like the first, Wofford controlled the majority of the play but great goalkeeping kept Furman in the game. Wofford had three great scoring chances: first in the 104
th minute Lasso saw his shot go just wide as it deflected off the far post, then Lissek was able to make a diving save to push Benny Puetter’s header outside the near post, and finally Lissek was able to stop another headed effort by Davis. However, despite the Terriers controlling the game, Furman was the one to score the game winner in the 108
th minute. Michael Gandier scored his second goal of the game to give the Paladins the 4-3 win. Drennan was able to save the initial shot but the Wofford defense was unable to clear the ball and Gandier was able to score off the rebound. In overtime, Wofford held the edge in shots (7-1) and corners (2-0) but it was not enough as Furman escaped with the victory.
