SPARTANBURG, S.C. – In the final contest of a three-game series, the Wofford baseball team was defeated 8-4 by Pittsburgh at Russell C. King Field on Sunday afternoon. The Panthers took advantage of nine walks and three Wofford errors in the game to take the series 2-1.
Wofford is 3-3 and Pittsburgh is 3-4. The Terriers were led by Mac Doyle, Konstantine Diamaduros, and David Roney with two hits each, while Josh Hyman had two RBIs. The Panthers were led by Casey Roche with two hits and two RBIs.
Through the first four innings, each team had three hits and four runners left on base. David Roney had two hits and Konstantine Diamaduros had one for the Terriers.
In the bottom of the fifth, Stephen Cantrell led off with a walk and Clark Wise singled. A triple with one out by Josh Hyman to right center game Wofford a 2-0 lead. A single byMac Doyle scored Hyman. Doyle moved to third on a throwing error and came home on a wild pitch to take a 4-0 lead. Konstantine Diamaduros doubled and David Roney walked, but both were left on base.
Pittsburgh led off the sixth with back-to-back doubles to score one run. A hit by pitch and walk loaded the bases for the Panthers. Two walks scored runs to cut the lead to 4-3 and an error added a run to tie the game at four with one out and the bases still loaded. A sacrifice fly by Stephen Vranka and a single by Anthony Defabio gave the Panthers a 6-4 lead.
The Terriers left two on base in the bottom of the sixth and the Panthers left two on base in the top of the seventh. Pittsburgh loaded the bases in the top of the eighth and one run scored on a wild pitch for a 7-4 score. A bases loaded walk added another run to make it 8-4 in the middle of the eighth.
In the top of the ninth, the Panthers left two on base. Wofford had Josh Hyman reach on a walk and Mac Doyle singled, however both runners were stranded to end the game at 8-4.
Wofford starter Jesse Morris went five innings and allowed four runs on five hits. Anthony Rowland (0-1) went a third of an inning and allowed two runs with a strikeout. Ryan Traylor added a third of an inning and allowed one hit. Dominick Del Monte faced one batter and recorded an out. Pete Noordsy worked 1.2 innings and allowed two runs on two hits with a strikeout. Alex Wilson walked two batters. Eric Eck closed the game with 1.1 innings on the mound and he allowed only one hit with a strikeout.
Pittsburgh starter Matt Wotherspoon (1-0) went seven innings and allowed four runs on seven hits with eight strikeouts. Luke Novosel threw the final two innings and allowed only one hit with three strikeouts.
The Terriers will travel to Presbyterian College on Wednesday, February 29 for a 2:00 p.m. game before returning home next weekend against Albany, Air Force and Valparaiso.
