BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The Wofford men’s tennis squad dropped a 5-2 decision to Gardner-Webb Tuesday afternoon at the Webb Tennis Complex.
With the loss, the Terriers fall to 1-6 overall, while the Runnin’ Bulldogs improve to 3-7 on the year.
The afternoon began with doubles action, where the pairing of Tinus Van Wyk and Rob Galloway defeated Korhan Ates and Adam Knutsson-Sundblad (8-6) at the No. 1 position, but Gardner-Webb took the other two matches to claim the point and take the early 1-0 advantage into singles play.
The Runnin’ Bulldogs built a 3-0 lead at the onset of singles play, taking matches at the No. 4 and No. 3 positions. The Terriers battled in each of the remaining matches, with three of them going into a third set to decide the winner. At the No. 5 position, Tom Wood battled back after dropping the first set to defeat Joao Poli (2-6, 6-4, 6-1). Gardner-Webb claimed the matches at the No. 6 and No. 2 positions to seal the overall victory. At the No. 1 position, Tinus Van Wyk was blanked by Korhan Ates in the first set, yet he fought back to claim the following two sets (0-6, 7-6, 7-6), with each going into a tiebreaker.
Wofford will return to action on Tuesday, March 6
th as they host Spartanburg Methodist. The match is set for a start time of 3:00 p.m. at the Reeves Tennis Center.
