SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford men’s tennis team earned an early advantage by claiming the doubles point and didn’t look back, earning a 6-1 victory over The Citadel Saturday afternoon at the Reeves Tennis Center.
With the win, the Terriers improve to 2-8 overall and 1-2 in Southern Conference play. The Citadel slips to 4-9 overall and 0-3 in league action.
In doubles play, the pairing of Tinus Van Wyk and Rob Galloway downed David Orces and Dillon Berkabile (8-6) at the No. 1 position, and the duo of Stuart Robertson and Tom Wood defeated Josh Cook and Peter Bleach (8-4) at the No. 2 spot to seal the doubles point for Wofford, giving the Terriers the early 1-0 advantage.
Wofford built on its early advantage, taking five of the six singles matches to seal the overall victory. At the No. 2 position, Drew Superstein downed Josh Cook in straight sets (6-1, 6-1), as did Jackson Keith at the No. 3 spot, defeating Dillon Berkabile (6-4, 6-3).
The Terriers dropped the first set in three matches, but fought back to win the following two sets in each match. At the No. 4 position, Rob Galloway defeated James Atkinson (6-7, 6-3, 10-6), Tom Wood defeated Peter Bleach (5-7, 7-5, 6-3) at the No. 5 spot, and Walker Heffron rallied to defeat Elliott Sperr (4-6, 7-5, 6-3) at the No. 6 position.
‘We competed well today,” stated Wofford head coach Rod Ray following the match. “We have been working hard to get tougher in some areas and that hard work paid off today. We could not have won this match without a lot of and heart and determination. The Citadel is a strong team with good athletic ability and we feel fortunate to come out on top.”
Wofford returns to action next Saturday, March 24
th, as the squad hosts UNC Greensboro in the third match of a four-match home stand. The match is slated for a 1:00 p.m. start time at the Reeves Tennis Center.
