SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford men’s tennis team claimed its second consecutive SoCon victory, taking a 4-3 decision over UNC Greensboro Saturday afternoon at the Reeves Tennis Center.
 
With the win, the Terriers improve to 3-8 overall and 2-2 in Southern Conference play, while the Spartans drop to 7-9 overall and 4-2 in league action.
 
The Terriers took the early advantage, taking two of the three doubles matches to claim the point.  At the No. 3 position, the duo of Walker Heffron and Jackson Keith defeated Cameron Smith and Jimmy Roueche (8-4), and the pairing of Tinus Van Wyk and Rob Galloway clinched the point at the No. 1 position, defeating Orcun Seyrek and Ahmet Sarioglu (9-8).
 
In singles action, the Terriers took three matches to seal the overall victory.  At the No. 4 position, Rob Galloway fought off a comeback attempt by Randy Phillips to win in the third set (7-6, 0-6, 6-3).  Tom Wood picked up a straight set victory at the No. 5 position, defeating Cameron Smith (6-4, 6-2), and Walker Heffron defeated Jimmy Roueche (6-3, 6-2) at the No. 6 spot.


“The guys committed and did a lot of little things well that added up to winning what would prove to be a very important doubles point,” stated Wofford head coach Rod Ray following the match. “UNC Greensboro wouldn’t quit and forced us to stretch outside of our comfort zone to earn enough singles points to win. I’m very proud of today’s win. The team has continued to work hard and we are improving.”


Wofford will next be in action on Monday afternoon, hosting Georgia Southern.  The match is slated for a start time of 1:00 p.m. at the Reeves Tennis Center.
