GREENVILLE, S.C. – The Wofford baseball team was defeated 9-5 by Furman on Sunday afternoon at Latham Stadium. The Terriers had a 5-4 lead at the seventh inning stretch, however the Paladins scored three runs in the seventh and two in the eighth to take the game and the weekend series.
Wofford is 19-28 overall and 6-18 in the Southern Conference. Furman is 22-25 overall and 9-15 in league play. The Terriers were led by Mac Doyle and Josh Hyman with two hits each, while Konstantine Diamaduros had one hit and three RBIs. The Paladins were led by Will Miller with three hits and Will Muzika with four RBIs.
The Terriers had singles from James Foster and Mac Doyle in the first inning. Konstantine Diamaduros then hit a ball off the scoreboard in right field to give Wofford a 3-0 lead. Furman was retired in order in the bottom of the first. Furman got one run back in the bottom of the second on a solo home run by Will Miller to make it a 3-1 game.
Both teams left one runner on base in the third inning. In the top of the fourth, the Terriers had runners at second and third base but both were stranded. Furman was able to tie the game in the bottom of the fourth on a two-run homer by Will Muzika.
Wofford had two runners on base in the top of the fifth as Matthew Pelt was hit by a pitch and Mac Doyle had a single, but a double play ended the scoring chance. Furman left one on base in the bottom of the fifth.
In the top of the sixth, Josh Hyman had a double to lead off the inning and James Plaisted reached on an error. David Roney hit into a double play, but Josh Hyman scored from third to regain the lead at 4-3. Furman had runners at second and third after a walk and error in the bottom of the sixth. A ground out by Chris Ohmstede scored Will Muzika from third to tie the game at four.
James Foster led off the top of the seventh with a walk. He stole second and moved to third on a wild pitch. Mac Doyle hit a fielder’s choice and Foster slide in under the tag at home to take a 5-4 lead. A double play ended the inning for the Terriers. A solo home run to left center by Will Owens to open the bottom of the seventh tied the game at five. After a single and a walk, Will Muzika hit a double down the left line that scored both runners for a 7-5 lead.
The eighth inning began for Wofford with a walk to Josh Hyman, but the next three hitters were retired in order. The Paladins had a double to open the bottom of the ninth by Heath Burton. After moving to third on a sacrifice bunt, Burton scored on a fielder’s interference call for an 8-5 advantage. With runners on the corners, a single by Will Miller pushed the lead to 9-5. In the top of the ninth, Wofford was retired in order to end the game.
Wofford starter Cash Collins (4-7) went seven innings and gave up seven runs on nine hits with two strikeouts. Three of the nine hits were home runs. J.D. Osborne threw one inning and gave up two unearned runs on two hits along with two strikeouts.
Furman starter Tyler Wood worked 6.1 innings and allowed five runs on seven hits with three strikeouts. Stephen Gary (3-0) picked up his second win of the weekend by going 2.2 innings without allowing a hit along with three strikeouts.
The single by James Foster to open the game was the 200th of his career. The final non-conference game of the season will be on Tuesday at 4:00 p.m. against Campbell at Russell C. King Field. Next weekend the Terriers will travel to UNCG for a three-game series beginning on Friday night.
