SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford men’s tennis team was defeated 6-1 by Gardner-Webb Thursday afternoon in a hard fought match-up that ended the Terriers two match win streak. Wofford drops to 2-4 on the year while the Runnin’ Bulldogs improve to 2-3.
In doubles action, the No. 1 pair of Rob Galloway and Walker Heffron topped Adam Knutsson and Matt Parker (8-4) to give the Terriers the early advantage. However, Gardner-Webb pulled even when Benjamin Kaszas and Brendan Dempsey defeated David Sklar and Tom Wood 8-5 at the No. 3 spot. The Runnin’ Bulldogs then clinched the doubles point when Nkita Zverkov and Ernest Alberch outlasted Graham Duncan and Parks Thompson in a tiebreaker, 8-7 (7-3), at No. 2.
On the singles side, Gardner-Webb extended their lead after a quick victory at the No. 5 position. Wofford closed the gap after Galloway defeated Knutsson in straight sets (6-2, 6-3) at No. 1. The Runnin’ Bulldogs responded with another straight set victory at the No. 4 spot to keep the lead at two. Despite dropping the first set in all three match-ups, the No. 2, 3 and 6 match-ups all went to a third set after Wofford rallied to win the second. First, Heffron responded with a 6-4 second set victory after dropping the first (6-2) to Roman Piftor at No. 3. Then, Sklar edged Zverkov (6-4) to even their match at one set apiece in the No. 6 spot. Finally, Drew Superstein won his second set in tied breaker over Kaszas, 7-6 (10-8), to even it up at the No. 2 position. However, despite strong second sets, the Terriers would fall in all three spots and Gardner-Webb emerged with the 6-1 win.
Wofford returns to the court on Saturday, February 16, when they travel to Conway, S.C. to face the Chanticleers of Coastal Carolina. The match is set to begin at 1:00 p.m.
