SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford women’s tennis team was defeated 6-1 on the road Wednesday afternoon by USC Upstate. The Terriers drop to 2-2 for the year while the Spartans improve to 3-2.
On the doubles side, USC Upstate jumped on top quickly with an 8-0 victory by Isabel von Stryk and Talia Rojas over Wofford’s Emily Przystawski and Mareli Sanchez at the No. 2 spot. The Spartans would then clinch the doubles point when Constanze Kuerten and Allison Beeler topped the Terrier pair of Julia Paulson and Lucy Schermerhorn (8-2) at the No. 3 position.
In singles action, Upstate would claim three more points to clinch the match after victories at the No. 3, No. 6, and No. 1 positions. Wofford’s lone point came after a three set victory by Sanchez over Rojas (1-6, 6-3, 6-2). The last match of the day, however, would prove to be the closest as USC Upstate’s Taylor Cohen squeaked by Wofford’s Audrey Coventry in three sets (6-2, 2-6, 10-8).
The Terriers will return to action next week when they travel to Boiling Springs, N.C. to face the Bulldogs of Gardner-Webb at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 13.
