SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford men’s tennis team was defeated 6-1 on the road at Georgia Southern Saturday afternoon in the Terriers’ Southern Conference opener. Wofford falls to 2-6 and 0-1 in conference play on the season while the Eagles improve to 4-3 and 1-0 in the SoCon.
In doubles action, Georgia Southern swept all three matches to claim the double point. However, the No. 1 and No. 2 match-ups could have gone either way as both finished 9-7 in favor of the Eagles. Rayane Djouad and Marco Osorio topped Wofford’s Rob Galloway and Walker Heffron at No. 1, and Matthijs Verdam and Oliver Webb got the better of Terriers Jackson Keith and Parks Thompson.
On the singles side, Georgia Southern pushed their lead to three after straight set victories by Andrew Dromsky over Drew Superstein (6-4, 6-2) and Webb over Graham Duncan (6-4, 6-3). At the No. 1 position, Galloway defeated Verdam in dominating fashion (6-2, 6-0) to earn Wofford’s only point of the match. The Eagles secured the win after Djouad edged Heffron in their second set tie-breaker (6-3, 7-5). The final two matches of the day were both extremely close. First, at No. 6, Thompson fell to Osorio after he dropped the first set in a tie-breaker and lost the second 7-5. Then, in the day’s final match, Codina Sala outlasted Keith in a third set super tie-breaker (7-6, 6-7, 10-8) to give Georgia Southern the 6-1 win.
The Terriers will return to action on Saturday, March 9, when they travel to face the Spartans of UNCG. The match is set to begin at 12:00 p.m.
