CHATTANOOGA, TN – The Wofford women’s tennis team was defeated on the road by Chattanooga 6-1 Saturday afternoon at the UTC Tennis Courts. The Terriers fall to 5-9 on the year and 1-3 in the Southern Conference while the Lady Mocs improve to 13-2 this season and 3-2 in conference play.
In doubles action, Chattanooga won all three matches to claim the doubles point. First, Alexa Flynn and Kelsey Coots topped Sarah Evans and Mareli Sanchez (8-0) at the No. 2 position. In the No. 3 spot, Wofford’s Othilia Lindqvist and Emily Przystawski battled Claire Mulyadi and Jovana Pecovski but eventually fell (8-6). Then in the final match-up, Kaylene Chadwell and Kayla Jones defeated Julia Paulson and Lucy Schermerhorn (8-3) to complete the sweep.
On the singles side, the Lady Mocs started fast, winning the first set in all six matches in route to five straight set wins. First, Coots handled Przystawski in (6-0, 6-0) at No. 5 to double Chattanooga’s lead. Then in the No. 3 spot, Sanchez fell to Jones (6-2, 6-0). The Lady Mocs clinched the victory after Flynn defeated Schermerhorn (6-4, 6-0) at the No. 4 position. The next two matches had the same result, as Nurik defeated Paulson (6-0, 6-2) in the No. 2 spot, and Mulyadi topped Lindqvist (6-2, 6-3) at the No. 6. Wofford’s lone point came when Chadwell retired to Evans in the second set.
Wofford returns to the court tomorrow, March 24, when they travel to Birmingham, Alabama, to face the Bulldogs of Samford. The match is set to begin at 12:00 p.m.
